THE National Bee Farmers Association will introduce organic bee farming to local farmers around the country next year.

Agriculture Ministry’s national co-ordinator Kamal Prasad said an organic honey variety, known as Lapita honey, had been farmed in Kadavu.

He said the production rate on Kadavu had proceeded well and that organic farming would be introduced next year.

“This year we imported around three tonnes of organic honey worth $23,000 for special purposes,” he said.

“These special purposes catered for the hotel needs and expatriate needs.

“We have been receiving a lot of interest from farmers around the country for organic honey production.”

Assistant agricultural officer in Labasa, Dharmend Prasad said organic honey production was different.

“Organic honey production is different from the normal production methods in that bees are bred in natural environments such as cane fields and flowering fields,” he said.
